South Florida Winter

Canon G12,  f4.5, 1/2000

I love experiencing this, the warm sun on my face with a cool breeze off the ocean. I also love to capture this type of scene but I do not always succeed. I processed in Photoshop and used Topaz adjust 5 to get a little more micro contrast, then added a slight vignette to bring more of the focus on the glistening sun on the water. Enjoy!

Jimbo's Shrimp

Nikon D300, Nikkor 10-24mm , f11, 5 exposures, ISO 200, 24mm

This is Jimbo's Place on Virgina Key on Key Biscayne. It has been around since 1959 and at one time a place to be. A place where famous people went and a set for movies. Now after many years and hurricanes the whole grounds look like a shanty town. I do not know if Jimbo is still alive but he was part of what made the place in it's day. Click here to see more photos of Jimbo's.

Ling Ling

iphone

This post is not about the photo. It is about Ling Ling, the sweetest little girl you would ever want to hold. She is a seven year old Shih Tzu and she is Joanna and Richards little girl. They own a embroidery company that I visit and when I get there Ling Ling can't wait for me to pick her up and scratch her. I am dad to three cats otherwise I would snatch her in a minute.  There is nothing like the Love of a little being like this.

The Equestrian

Nikon D300, Nikkor 70-300mm, f6.3 / 1/640, ISO 200, 140mm

The equestrian sport consists of the jumper class, which this photo shows and the hunter class which focuses more on style and finesse. The jumper class races time and the amount of hurtles jumped over without knocking the bars off. To watch these riders and their beautiful horses is a site to see and the sport does not abuse the horses. In fact they are taken care of like they were children. One of the major equestrian sport complexes is in Wellington, Florida which is where the photo was taken. Watching this sport is so beautiful it is hard to concentrate on the mechanics of the photography. I'll be back 8-)

Harbor Pilots

Nikon D300, Nikkor 18-200mm, f11.0/5 exposures, ISO 200, 150mm

This is a High Dynamic Range photo of the dock and (hanger/garage) of the Port Everglades pilots. I shot in HDR  so I could see inside their garage, otherwise it would be all shadows and you could not see their junk (I laugh). These harbor pilots command very large salaries because of the dangers associated with the job. In any conditions two of them go out in the ocean to guide large ships into the harbor. One pilots this small craft alongside the ship and the other climbs a ladder up the side to take control of the ship entering the harbor. They also do this in reverse where one of the pilots climbs down the ladder of the ship and has to jump to the pilot boat deck. This done in any sea conditions. Think about doing this in 12 ft seas. Is up to $100,000 a year too much for this job?

Innocent Beauty

Nikon D300, Nikkor 18-200mm, f5.0/1/50, ISO 800, 82mm

This is my Maggie's grandaughter Jasmine. She will put a smile on your face every time. So far I have not been able get her to do a photography sitting but this snapshot came out quite well. She is facing some  french doors with the afternoon light shining in which created a wonderful catch light in her eyes. Soon you will meet Aaron, Maggie's grandson.

A Gift from the Source

Nikon D300, Nikkor 70-300, f8.0/1/250, 300mm

This photograph expresses exactly what I saw. The purity of this scene lifts my heart, it is a ray of sunshine to the soul. A Great White Egret basking in the sun on a wetland grass.

Of Times Gone By

Nikon D300, Nikkor 18-200mm, f11.0/1/400, 56mm

This is the way it used to be. South Florida scrub land. After processing this photo I realized how strongly it reminded me of what I saw more off when I was a young boy and the old photos I have seen of old Florida. That is before the influx of people and all the construction that has wiped out a good part of this land. This is Kitching Creek trail, which leads down to the Loxahatchee river. The Florida ecosystem is more diverse than most people think. This trail leads down to a part of the Loxahatchee that is lined with Mangroves but if you were to walk south a few miles the river would get very narrow and the ecosystem changes to Cypress swamp.

Beach Buddies

Nikon D80, Nikkor 18-135mm, 1/500 at f/8.0, 105mm

It was a very cold but sunny day on an isolated stretch of Dania beach. I was walking along the shoreline when from a distance I could see a pelican approaching. When he got to where I was, he settled into the water and as I walked a few more feet he would flap his wings and swim along as I went. Hey, I have a new friend so I took out my camera and started to take pictures and talk to him so he decided to give me a show by flying around me, dipping his wings and making graceful sweeps. I went back to just watching him and he settled again into the water. We visited awhile then I had to leave. As I was leaving I turned around and he was flying off down the shoreline. I would bet anything we will meet again, me and my beach buddy.

My Birmans, aka: My Kids

Nikon D80, Nikkor 50mm, 1/25 at f/1.8

Nikon D300, Nikkor 18-200mm, 1/30 at f/5.6, 105mm

Before I go any any further I want to introduce my kids whom I adore. The photo on top is my little girl "Kiqi". She is very petite but walks the house like a princess viewing her domain. The photo on the bottom is of my little boy "Zenji". He runs the house like it was his jungle and never stops. If you would like to read more about them and the Birman legend and also see more photos please Click Here.

Burrowing Owls

Nikon D300, Nikkor 70-300mm, 1/320 at f/5.6, 300mm

Nikon D300, Nikkor 70-300mm, 1/250 at f/8.0, 300mm

These guys are one of my favorites of the animal kingdom. They can be right in your face as they say. The first little guy stuck his head out of his burrow the instant I walked up to see who was knocking on his door. The second little guy saw me coming and decided I should keep my distance. These owls are so liked and protected that even though their burrows are in the middle of a ball field no one harms them, in fact the game plays around them.

The Start of a New Day

iphone capture

As this is this blog's first post, I thought I would show when my day
starts. It is a great time to listen to the silence. Silence is where
imagination and creativity begins and at this time of day it gives me
space around the sometimes mundane daily schedule that lies ahead.
