The jumper class races time and the amount of hurtles jumped over without knocking the bars off. To watch these riders and their beautiful horses is a site to see and the sport does not abuse the horses. In fact they are taken care of like they were children. One of the major equestrian sport complexes is in Wellington, Florida which is where the photo was taken. Watching this sport is so beautiful it is hard to concentrate on the mechanics of the photography. I shot in HDR so I could see inside their garage, otherwise it would be all shadows and you could not see their junk (I laugh). These harbor pilots command very large salaries because of the dangers associated with the job. In any conditions two of them go out in the ocean to guide large ships into the harbor. One pilots this small craft alongside the ship and the other climbs a ladder up the side to take control of the ship entering the harbor. They also do this in reverse where one of the pilots climbs down the ladder of the ship and has to jump to the pilot boat deck. This done in any sea conditions. Think about doing this in 12 ft seas. South Florida scrub land. After processing this photo I realized how strongly it reminded me of what I saw more off when I was a young boy and the old photos I have seen of old Florida. That is before the influx of people and all the construction that has wiped out a good part of this land. This is Kitching Creek trail, which leads down to the Loxahatchee river. The Florida ecosystem is more diverse than most people think. This trail leads down to a part of the Loxahatchee that is lined with Mangroves but if you were to walk south a few miles the river would get very narrow and the ecosystem changes to Cypress swamp.

Beach Buddies

Nikon D80, Nikkor 18-135mm, 1/500 at f/8.0, 105mm

It was a very cold but sunny day on an isolated stretch of Dania beach. I was walking along the shoreline when from a distance I could see a pelican approaching. When he got to where I was, he settled into the water and as I walked a few more feet he would flap his wings and swim along as I went. Hey, I have a new friend so I took out my camera and started to take pictures and talk to him so he decided to give me a show by flying around me, dipping his wings and making graceful sweeps. I went back to just watching him and he settled again into the water. We visited awhile then I had to leave. As I was leaving I turned around and he was flying off down the shoreline. I would bet anything we will meet again, me and my beach buddy.

My Birmans, aka: My Kids

Nikon D80, Nikkor 50mm, 1/25 at f/1.8

Nikon D300, Nikkor 18-200mm, 1/30 at f/5.6, 105mm

Before I go any any further I want to introduce my kids whom I adore. They can be right in your face as they say. The first little guy stuck his head out of his burrow the instant I walked up to see who was knocking on his door. The second little guy saw me coming and decided I should keep my distance. These owls are so liked and protected that even though their burrows are in the middle of a ball field no one harms them, in fact the game plays around them.

The Start of a New Day

iphone capture

As this is this blog's first post, I thought I would show when my day
starts. It is a great time to listen to the silence. Silence is where
imagination and creativity begins and at this time of day it gives me
space around the sometimes mundane daily schedule that lies ahead.
